Fifth ACP Benefit [1998] [Video]
By Hyde, Henry J.
Author Egan, Msgr. Jack Author Pro-Life Celebration
This is a videotape of the 1998 Annual Benefit for the American Catholic Press. The highlight of the evening was the conferral of the Gratiam Dei Award on the Honorable Henry J. Hyde, at the time, the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. For many years, Chairman Hyde has been an ardent defender of the pro-life cause; and for this he was honored by ACP. The video includes his stirring acceptance speech. Grace before and after meals, respectively, was given by Francis Cardinal George, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago, and Metropolitan Iakovos, Greek Orthodox Bishop of Chicago. Both Churches share a strong pro-life tradition. The video also features the singing of the pro-life hymn, Lord of All Life.

Present at the celebration were Archimandrite Dimitri Kantzavelos, chancellor of the local Orthodox diocese, Father John McDonald, professor at Mundelein Seminary, Justice John Nickels of the Supreme Court, Neil Hartigan, President of the World Trade Center, Joe and Ann Scheidler, Honorable Ed Burke, Alderman, Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, Knights of Columbus, judges, physicians, clergy, and many pro-life activists. St. James Hospital, Chicago Heights, was represented by Father Ron Kondziolka, Sister Marlene Shapley, O.S.F., and more than an entire table. Pro-life offices of the Diocese of Joliet and the Archdiocese of Chicago also brought many people to the Benefit. Three major universities were represented. This ACP Benefit was covered by six local TV stations, as well as several newspapers. A huge photo of a baby, with the single word "Life," formed the backdrop to the speakers' podium. The visual image on TV was effective and unavoidable.
Flute and harp music was provided by Anna Belle O'Shea and Nancy Dunagan. In spite of a driving rain outside and Friday night traffic, the Flossmoor Country Club was filled with a capacity crowd. This was a celebration to remember. Order the video today!
